Clarence Hughes

Senior Counsel Clarence Albert Fitzgerald Hughes, who turned 77 last Saturday, died on Friday at his Subryanville, Greater Georgetown home following a short period of illness. The late Hughes was head of the chambers at the legal firm Hughes, Fields and Stoby.
He was the father of three children: Attorney and Alliance For Change (AFC) Chairman Nigel Hughes, Stuart Hughes and Elizabeth Hughes. Clearance was originally from New Amsterdam Berbice and practised in other Caribbean states.
The late Hughes graduated from the University of London with an LLB (Hons) degree and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in the United Kingdom in February 1958.
Admitted to practise as a barrister in Guyana in 1959, Hughes was engaged continuously in private practice up until the time of his death.
He was a board member of several companies in Guyana, and served as chairman of Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Companies. He was also a director at Guyana Refrigerators Limited, Industrial Domestic and Electrical Appliances Limited, and Guyana Lighting Limit.
